A successful transportation company needs more than just a fleet of nice-looking vehicles, explains Patricia Stephenson the founder of Executive Limousine.

When asked what led her to launch her business in 1979 and then build it to maintain a leadership position in the industry for the next 30 years, Patricia Stephenson doesn’t hesitate to give her answer. “I had ambition and discipline, and knew I had to keep the consumer in focus,” she says. “I had to know what they wanted, what they would pay for and then deliver that.”

The start of her company, Executive Limousine, wasn’t that simple, but a focus on customers ensured its constant growth, she says. Stephenson began her career in Los Angeles in public relations, with executive clients from various corporations, as well as the entertainment industry. In serving her customers, she realized no one locally was offering quality transportation services.

“ In 1977 there was one guy with a small fleet of black limousines that he parked next to the garbage dumps at the Century Plaza Hotel,” she says. “Roaches would crawl into the cars and get into people’s luggage or ladies hand bags. Techniuni, out of Amsterdam, came to me and said I needed to offer my own cars to my clients. I didn’t know anything about that kind of business, so I did some research to find the top limo manufacturer, Mr. Carlos Allen, from Laredo Texas, and I started this business with a few corporate sedans and one white custom built Lincoln Continental six-passenger limousine.”

To maintain a high level of customer service, Stephenson believed the structure and style of a limo needed improvement. She went to her manufacturer with a rendering of what her vehicles should look like – she mandated that they be comfortable and have plenty of space for the passengers. She also removed the bar in the middle of the chassis that people had to crawl over. Additionally, she wanted her limousines to be colors other than black – her first orders included white limos, as well as dark blue and silver. “My fleet was built to endure and made for comfort,” she says.

By 1986, her business had grown so much with the transportation services that she had to close her public relations firm, Executive Network, and bring on investors to expand the fleet and employee base. Stephenson wasn’t able to trademark the Executive Limousine name, but she did trademark the company’s logo of four stars on a strip of film, which, she says, is well known in the entertainment industry and with corporate clients throughout the country.

“We supply cars to the Academy Awards each year and other award shows, and have many big accounts,” she says. “We are a leader in this industry and have a great reputation – about 40 percent of our business is from word of mouth and referrals, which we are really proud of.”

High Standards

Since its inception, Executive Limousine has grown to have more than 80 luxury vehicles in its fleet, including corporate sedans, executive vans and limousines for six, eight, 10, 12 or 14 passengers. It also offers 16-passenger “corporate style” Mercedes and Escalades, as well as full party SUVs to seat 18- to 30 -passenger Hummers and Escalades, which have a separate lounge with video games, I pod connection, Karaoke, Fireplace and martini bars. Additionally, the company’s “party bus” comes outfitted with a glass dance floor, (2) dance poles and a Granite bar with a 48” plasma T.V and surround sound.

“I was slow to warm to the idea of the party bus,” Stephenson says. “I didn’t think my clients would be receptive to them. But that part of the business has really taken off big time – every type of person and age group wants to hire one of those. It’s comfortable, has a good amount of space and isn’t as expensive to run as I originally thought, so that business is doing really well.” This party bus is referred as “a night club on wheels.”

Based in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, the Executive Limousine corporate office is within 10 minutes of LAX and has a showroom spanning 15,000 square feet. With its subsidiaries, Malibu Limousine and Brentwood Limousine, the company is able to serve customers throughout Southern California and at airports other than LAX. It also recently opened offices in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Orlando, Fla., and Portland, Ore., and serves customers in other cities through affiliate partners.

“Our offices outside Los Angeles are staffed with our people, our drivers and our cars,” Stephenson says. “Our affiliates also have to meet our standards in all parts of their business – I don’t want the clients thinking they are getting anything less than what we promise or feeling like the service varies in different parts of the country.”

All of Executive Limousine ’s drivers must have their commercial license and submit to random drug and alcohol testing. Stephenson says that if drivers have any compromise on their licensed after their hire, the DMV notifies the company immediately. The company also provides body guards and bonded drivers if customers need them.

“Part of the key to our leadership in the industry is that we staff everything properly,” she says. “We are never short on drivers and I am a stickler on time and quality performance. They can’t work for me if they can’t be professional. I pay them well and promptly, which also is a big factor in our ability to provide exceptional service.

“I am proud of our people – 90 percent of our repeat business is due to our drivers and staff, so they are a large part of what has made this company successful.” Our telephone agents answer our calls 24/7.

To ensure its fleet maintains “extremely high standards” in safety and aesthetics, she says, the company gets new vehicles every three to four years. Executive Limousine has in-house operations and fleet managers to monitor the vehicles, and in-house mechanics go over each car once a week to ensure they are in “prime condition.” This is as important as quality drivers, she says.

“GPS is integrated into all of our vehicles, so we can always monitor our cars, drivers and make sure everyone is safe,” she says. “All of our large vehicles also have drive cams. This is important for customer service, but also keeps our insurance premiums low. Insurance companies love us because we are careful to not put too many people in one car. We have low rates because we are a big company, but we also have the best coverage.”

Executive Limousine also offers Yatchs, Private Jets and Helicopters through its affiliates. Stephenson explains the company will only grow and expand the fleet if it can maintain the same level of personal service.

“We just want to keep up with what consumers want and continue to provide the best service,” she says. “ It all starts with our clients – we build good relationships and then expand according to our needs. That is how we have remained successful and continued to grow for 30 years.”
